An accomplished Kanjira artiste, teacher and stage performer S. Sunil Kumar is an ‘A’ grade artiste in All India Radio, Chennai. In his early age, he has learnt thalam and basic lessons under the guidance of his father Triplicane K. Sekar. Later, he started learning kanjira from kanjira maestro V. Selvaganesh and konnakol from ghatam maestro T.H. Vikku Vinayakram. He has accompanied many stalwarts such as clarinet Everest Sri A.K.C. Natrajan, Prof T.N. Krishnan, Sri Dr. T.V. Gopalakrishnan, Sri T.H. Vikku Vinayakram, Sri Guruvayur Dorai and senior artistes such as Padmashri Kum A. Kanyakumari, Sri Sanjay Subramaniam, Vidhushi Smt Bombay Jayashri, Vidhushi Smt Sudha Ragunathan. He has also performed with many young artistes.
He plays classical percussion instruments such as thavil, kanjira along with many leading fusion bands. He has performed in many jugalbandhi & fusion concerts. He has performed in Sri Kanchi kamakoti Mutt Paramachariya’s concert, SVBC Nadaneeranjanam programs. He has played kanjira solo with Guru Mr. Selvaganesh for Ustad Alla Rakha. He has performed in the National program in Thiruvaiyaru in the year 2016, Festival at Bombay the year 2011 and also played many popular concerts etc,,,
He has performed in Thalavadhya concerts with many leading mridangam, ghatam and kanjira artistes. He has won 1st prize in many national level cultural competitions for solo performances organized by Anna University and other colleges. He has performed in various sabhas during music seasons and other festivals such as Krishna Gana Sabha, Music Academy, Brahma Gana Sabha etc. He has been rendering performances in India and abroad. He has also performed in many Albums, CDs and TV programs along with several artistes. He was awarded Thethakudi Harihara Sharma Percussion Award by Sri Krishna Gana Sabha during 2011, Sri Kanchi kamakoti Peetam Asthana Vidhwan in 2013. He was given the title of ‘Yuva Kala Bharathi’ by Bharath Kalachar in 2013. He has also received Dr. M.S. Subhalakshmi fellowship in the year 2015 given by Mumbai Shanmukhananda.
